Tanken om å reise eit nasjonalmonument som minne over Harald Hårfagre kom opp i slutten av 1860-åra, og fekk tilslutning frå heile landet. Til 1000-års festen for Noregs samling 18. juli 1872, stod monumentet ferdig på Haraldshaugen ved Haugesund. Monumentet vart høgtideleg innvigd av arveprins Oscar, den seinare kong Oscar II.
